White or Wheat bread, which is better for you?
When I was growing up, I remember the slogan the whiter
the bread the faster you are dead. Actually, neither is good for most
people. Most people have food sensitivities (allergies) to wheat. Wheat is
one of the most common food allergies. Between 50-70% of people have
allergies to wheat (they can range from mild to severe.) It is best to
avoid foods that contain wheat entirely.
Many people assume that wheat bread is better; however,
in most cases they are they same. The best bread for you to eat is sprouted
wheat (Ezekiel or Food for Life in the healthy frozen food section), rice or
spelt bread.
Wheat is used to make so many products because it
doesn’t crumble, like many other grains, when you bake with it. While this
is nice to produce food, it is not good inside your body because it is much
more difficult to break down. In some cases the body can’t break it down
and it can accumulate in your intestines.
Here is an experiment for your bread.
Cut the crust off your bread. Then squeeze the bread into a ball. If the
bread crumbles it is probably fine to eat. If it does any of these: makes a
ball, holds the ball shape, is squishy or like elastic, or if it bounces
when you drop it, it is not good to be putting in your body.
When it is necessary to have wheat strive to have as
little as possible and when you do have it try to get it from natural and/or
organic sources.
Here is a simple food allergy test. This
can be used for any product- try it yourself with wheat. Stop eating the
food in ANY form for 2 weeks. Then try the food again. If you notice any
changes in you body such as: bloating, headaches, elevated blood pressure,
increased pulse, stomach ache, constipation, or loose stool, your body is
sensitive or allergic to that product. This can be tough with products such
as wheat, dairy, corn, or other product that seem to be in everything, but
it can be done. This is a simple test and is not the same as an allergy
test, but it is a good start.
