Milk, it does a body good?

Our first food is milk. In fact according to most books, the only food we should have for the first 6-12 months of our life is our mother’s milk. There can’t possibly be anything bad from something that starts so good, right?

Milk itself is not bad. It just has to stay within the same species. There are also only certain times when our bodies can process it.

Did you know that humans are the only mammals that drink milk past the baby stage? Milk is specifically designed to give the newborn nutrients that it will need to grow quickly and to become healthy. Most animals wean their young after a few weeks to months so they can begin eating “real foods” for the species.

Each species has different nutrient make-up of their milk. For an example, to compare human to cow milk, cow milk has 3-4 times the protein and 5-7 times the mineral content. Human milk has much more essential fatty acids. In fact human milk has 6-10 times the essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Additionally babies get antibodies from mom, which gives their body immunity to whatever is in their environment.

Now we know cow milk isn’t designed for us. Are there any other problems with milk? 50 years ago the top cows produced 2,000 pounds of milk per year. Today the top cows produce 50,000 pounds per year. Drugs, hormones, antibiotics, specialized breeding, and forced feeding has increased milk production 25 times. These products are being passed to us, which is part of why we are getting less healthy as a society.

Well what about calcium? Yes, milk does contain calcium; however, it is definitely not the best source of calcium (vegetables). Additionally, the high levels sodium in milk actually pulls calcium out of bones. In a recent Harvard study, the people that drank 2 or more glasses of milk per day had a 45% HIGHER risk of hip fracture.

USA Today Article: "Sixty percent of adults can't digest milk"
